Winter Range
Hunters
Our U.S. Forest Service Special Use Permit
allows us to day hunt in over one-million acres of
the Bitterroot National Forest. Each day we leave
the cabin in our 4x4 vehicles to hunt Mule deer or Whitetail Deer.
During our Winter Range hunts we are hoping for large amounts of snow to
push the deer out of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and the Sapphire
Mountain Divide. There are always some deer in the area, but in years
with heavy snow we can end up with all the deer in 1/2 of the area,
thus doubling your chances of success.
The Bitterroot fires of 2000 burned 300,000 acres
creating excellent deer hunting conditions. We find ourselves using
spotting scopes more than ever before. This
is some of the best spot and stalk hunting in the nation, it is not
uncommon to see many trophy class mule deer bucks during your Winter
Range Hunt. Hopefully you will be lucky enough to draw a limited mule
deer permit for 261 or 270.
Our cabin lies with the
Bitterroot Range to the west and the Sapphires to the east. In contrast
to our wilderness area, the terrain consists of rolling lodge pole
ridges. We can take advantage of the closed roads and hunt on horseback
or on foot for many of miles behind these locked gates. For the
ambitious hunter, we have thousands of roadless acres available to
hunt.
*Hunters coming after November 15 cannot hunt Mule Deer without a 270-50 or 261-50 permit.
